One of the most important things to know about a Led Fresnel light is how to pronounce it.The light, or more accurately the lens found in the lighting fixture, is named after the French engineer who invented the technology for lighthouses in the early 1800s. Over the last few years LED technology has come a long way and compared to tungsten fresnels, the newest generation of LED fresnels are capable of achieving the same levels of brightness, but with less than a third of the power consumption. The reduced electricity usage equates to lower running costs as the fixtures can be run from a standard mains power source. In comparison to tungsten and HMI lights, LED fixtures have almost zero maintenance costs as you don’t need to buy new bulbs and their LED light engines are rated to last about 200 times longer than tungsten lamps. As I just mentioned the biggest benefit is that you can run these lights off standard mains power supplies which was all but impossible to do for most large output HMI fresnel fixtures.

led theatre lightFresnel Theatre Lights used on film sets are fairly simple tools, quick to master. They are a light source of varying size and intensity and have the ability to be used as a fresnel spotlight or a soft video light. The apparatus itself is a lamp of various wattage that sits on a movable track behind a Fresnel lens and in front of a spherical reflector. The reflector directs most of the light towards the Fresnel lens, which then corals the illumination into a beam. Trust me, they are even easier to use than I just explained. Fresnel Lights are also great for product shots where you need to light relatively small, immobile props from a distance. And as mentioned earlier, many film stages will have a ceiling pipe grid filled with hanging Fresnels as well as other lights, usually controlled from a light board.

Although the color produced by LED Theatre Fresnels, especially early models, is less desirable by many, they do draw much less power, stay cooler and can have the ability to be dimmable and/or switch between daylight and tungsten in color from within their single unit. I’ve also read that more powerful LED Fresnels can produce fan noise. Fresnels are known for their directional light that can produce hard, crisp shadows. Another nice feature is that the light remembers the output level you last had it on when you turned it off. This is handy if you turn the light off and break for lunch and then come back and turn it back on. Even if you move the brightness knob around (as long as the light is off) it will come back on at the same exact level you left it at.
